Section Nine

Hugh I De Lusignan was married to Unknown . Quote from W. L. Warren's "King John" with regard to the Angevins: "' From the Devil they came', growled St Bernard, 'and to the Devil they will return.' (from Gerald of Wales 'Geraldi Cambrensis Opera') Popular gossip told of the Angevins descent from a devilish ancestress - It was a convenient explanation of their demonic energy, their ferocious ruthlessness. In the age of long ago, when all fairy stories are credible, a count of Anjou, men said, returned from a distant journey with a strange woman whom he married. She was evidently a lady and very beautiful, but there was much that was odd about her: she had no relatives or friends, she seldom went to church, and when she did always made some excuse to leave before the Consecration. In time her husband became so puzzled by her behavior that he instructed four of his knights to stay close by her when next she entered the church, and prevent her slipping out. Just as the Consecration was beginning she made as if to leave, but the knight trod on the hem of her robe to detain her. As the priest raised the Host above his head she uttered a scream, wrenched apart the fastening of her cloak to escape from it, and still shrieking flew out of the window. She was Melusine, daughter of Satan, and no evil spirit, as is well known, can look upon the Body of Christ. In her flight she dragged two of her children with her; but two remained and from them were descended the Angevine kings of England. Henry II's sons, with characteristically profane humor, were prone to joke about the story, and to people who protested against their fighting among themselves they replied: 'Do not deprive us of our heritage; we cannot help acting like devils.' Hugh I De Lusignan and Unknown had the following children:

Hugh II De Lusignan born about 910 and died about 950. He married Unknown and had the following child:

Hugh III The White De Lusignan born 948 and died about 1011 He married Arsendis who was born about 959. They are the parents of:

Hugh VII De Lusignan was born about 1090 and died after February 2, 1150/51. He married Sarazene of Armenia who was born about 1095 and died about 1144. There is at least one book on the subject namely Sir Algernon Tudor-Craig's "The Romance of Melusine and De Lusignan" The Century House London 1932. A mythical Count Raimondin de Poitou accidentally killed his uncle in the forest of Coulombiers, near Lusignan. He saw a woman in white nearby with whom he fell in love. She was a local fairy, Melusine who had murdered her father and so turned into a half serpent every Saturday-. He did not know this part of it and, madly in love, he married her. They built the castle of Lusignan on the spot where he first saw her Eventually-of course he spied on her one Saturday despite his promise not to and as a result she flew out the window.. There is a picture of her in the March illustration of the Tres Riche Heurs of Berry, flying over a castle. Many carvings in southern France e.g. Notre Dame du Puy, Porche de For, corbel in the choir of church of Saint-Pierre in Chauvigny etc. represent her. Later around 1151 Hugues VII of Lusignan married a Saracen girl named Sarazanne and she became entwined with the Melisine legend and it developed the oriental flavor. Hugh VII De Lusignan and Sarazene are the parents of:

Hugh VIII De Lusignan was born about 1106 and died about 1172. He married Burgundia "Berbone" De Rancon who was born about 1120. In late 1163 NAR ED-DIN taking advantage of Amalric's absence in Egypt, attacked Tripoli. He invaded the Buqaia in order to lay siege to Krak castle. But Hugh de Lusignan, Geoffrey Martel, brother to Count Angouleme and their followers, were passing through Tripoli on return from Jerusalem. They joined Count Raymond and an urgent appeal to Antioch brought Bohemond III and the Imperial general Constantine Coleman down from the North. This united army marched swiftly through the hills and surprised the Moslems at their camp below Krak. After a short battle, in which Colman and his troops distinguished themselves, NAR ED-DIN fled in disorder to Homs, regrouped his army and received reinforcement whence the Christians abandoned the pursuit. However in 1164 Hugh VIII with Bohemond, Raymond of Tripoli and Constantine Coleman were taken prisoners at the siege of Harenc and taken to Aleppo. Hugh VIII died in captivity.
