John Balliol of Byewell died October 24, 1168 and married Devorguilla De Galloway in 1133 and had the following child:

John King of Scotland was born 1140 and married Isabel De Warren. John Balliol, the family originated from Bailleul in Normandy. They came to Scotland in the reign of David I. John was selected by Edward I of England from among the thirteen 'competitors' or claimants for the Scottish throne in 1292. By 1296 he had found the courage to resist Edward's authority but was defeated at the Battle of Dunbar. He gave up the kingship and was ridiculed in Scotland as 'Toom Tabard' (empty coat) thereafter. First imprisoned in England, he was subsequently permitted to retire to his estates in France. Margaret Balliol was born 1167 in Baronage, Byewell, Northcumberland, England and married Sir Richard Lord of Risendale De Umfreville in 1193. Sir Richard is the son of Sir Gilbert De Umfreville who died 1195 and Matilda Countes of Agnus (married in Torrlington County, Herts). Sir Richard succeeded Robert De Humfreville, his grandfather. He was Captain of the Castle of Acres in Palestine. He was Present at the signing of the Magna Carta. Gilbert Lord of Redesdale De Umfreville and Baron Prudhoe was born about 1195 in Castle Prudhoe, Northcumberland, England and died before March 13, 1244/45 in the same place during Passion Week. He is buried at Priory, Hexham, Northcumberland, England. He married Maud Matilda of Angus who was born about 1215 in District, Angus, now Forfar, Scotland. About Matilda's parents: Earl of Angus Malcolm born about 1190 in Angus, Scotland married in Castle Prudhoe to Mary (Maud) De Berkeley born about 1200 in Gartley, Banffshire, Scotland. By his marriage to Maud/Matilda of Angus (the Scottish King's second Cousin) his son Gilbert inherited the Earldom of Angus. Gilbert may have been using the title of Earl between 1243 and 1245 so I have included him in this section. Manor lands at Otterburn are mentioned in Gilbert's will amongst the list of his property. This may indicate that he was the owner if not the builder of Otterburn tower. Gilbert Lord of Redesdale De Umfreville and Maud Matilda of Angus are the parents of:

Sir Gilbert De Umfreville Earl of Angus Lord of Redesdale was born 1244 in Castle, Prudhoe, Northumberland, England and died before October 13, 1307 in Castle, Prudhoe, Northumberland, England and buried at Priory, Hexam, Northumberland, England. He married before October 13, 1307 in Castle, Prudhoe, Northcumberland, England to Elizabeth (Agnes) Comyn who was born about 1248 in Buchan, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Gilbert Earl of Angus and Elizabeth (Agnes) Comyn are the parents of;
